Summary: SocialDwarfs is a very easy to use social media management tool. It allows the creation and scheduling of posts and images to multiple social networks, and it allows you to keep up to date with news and activity in your niche thanks to the streams and research sections.

With the ability to add unlimited social media accounts and free stats, it's a great alternative for those who find other social media management tools too restricting or expensive.

It can be hard to make sure you keep up with social media promotion when you’re running a website, and even more so when you’re running multiple sites. With so many things to do, it’s easy to let Tweets and Facebook posts fall through the cracks.

I don't only forget or procrastinate my social media marketing, I also tend to avoid social media because I know I’ll probably lose hours to Facebook or Twitter when I log in there.

Avoidance and procrastination are really not the best ways to grow a social media following, so I decided it was time to start using a social media management tool. That way I could schedule posts in advance and make sure I provided my readers with more than just a link to my latest blog post.

The obvious choices were Hootsuite and Buffer, but as I compared their features I realized that if I joined them I’d be very limited with the number of social profiles and scheduled posts I’d be allowed - unless I joined one of their more expensive plans, which seemed like overkill (and also more than I was willing to pay).

It was around this time that I heard about SocialDwarfs, a brand new social media management tool. Unfortunately I didn't have time to try it out because I was about to leave for a month-long family reunion in South Africa.

Now that I’ve had a chance to explore it's features, I wish I had tried it out sooner. Both the plans - free and paid - allow you to manage unlimited social media accounts! So it would've been perfect for scheduling social media updates for all my websites while I was away without access to internet.

Let's see what else it can do.

Social Media Accounts and Integration

Right now SocialDwarfs enables you to manage unlimited accounts on 4 different social media platforms:

  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest
  • Facebook (accounts, pages, and groups)

I asked the CEO of SocialDwarfs if he has plans to add more integrations. This is what he said:

Main focus is on the big 4 for now: Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Pinterest but we're exploring new social networks. Members will be notified once new networks are on the roadmap for future rollout.

So hopefully we'll see more integration with more platforms soon! I won't be able to manage all my social media accounts with SocialDwarf until it also integrates with YouTube, Google+ and Instagram - but right now the ability to manage unlimited accounts is more important to me, so I can wait for additional integrations.

One thing to note with Pinterest accounts is that you can’t just add your Pinterest account - you have to choose exactly which boards in that account you want to post to.

This ensures that when you’re scheduling your Pinterest posts they’ll all go to the right boards, but it might get messy once you've added a few accounts with lots of boards. I think it would have been better to just add your Pinterest account and then be able to choose the board from a dropdown or something when you're scheduling posts.

Creating and Scheduling Posts

It's very easy to create and schedule posts. You just pick which accounts you'd like to post to, create your message, and then choose to publish immediately or schedule it for a future date and time.

If you choose to post your message to accounts on different platforms, there'll be a character count for each platform beneath the text box, so that you don't go over any limits.

There are also "quick insert" buttons to quickly add your website URL and hashtags you’ve used in the past. You can choose from your most used hashtags, your recent ones, or just search through all of them.

Your scheduled posts will show up in a timeline on your Scheduler dashboard. Here you can filter posts by account, date range, or time range and edit or delete them if needed.

You can also bulk upload messages from this page. All you need is a text file with each post you want published on a new line. Then when you upload the file you choose the date range and which accounts the messages must be posted to, and they'll be scheduled randomly between those dates.

It's also possible to download a csv file of all your scheduled posts and the dates, times and accounts they’ll be posted on by clicking the “Export Global Schedule” button.

One thing I would like to see improved here is that it’s difficult to see which posts are scheduled to which account. You can easily see which social media platform they’ll be posted to because there’s an icon on every post, but you have to mouseover the icon so see exactly which account it’s going to. This can be inconvenient when you have multiple accounts on each platform.

Visual Composer

SocialDwarfs not only allows you to add images to your social media posts, it actually allows you to create them with a built-in image editing tool called the Visual Composer.

With the Visual Composer you can quickly make professional looking images to add to social media by uploading a photo and applying one of the pre-made templates to it. The free plan includes 5 templates and the Pro plan has 42 templates at the time of writing.

In the setting tab of the Visual Composer you can fill in some information like your website URL, title, tagline, etc. This will pre-populate the templates with the appropriate information, saving you a lot of time.

All the text is editable, and you can move or scale your uploaded image until it's positioned how you want it in the template.

You can also change the background colour of the text boxes and increase or decrease their padding, or change the order of the layers. There are even buttons to align the text boxes in the horizontal or vertical middle (and of course to the top, bottom, left, or right).

Streams and Keeping Up to Date in Your Niche

In the Streams section of the dashboard you can monitor your Facebook wall feed, your Twitter home feed, and/or your Twitter mentions - all without leaving SocialDwarfs.

This is really cool because it removes a lot of the distractions that you might otherwise end up wasting time on. I always lose hours when I visit Facebook!

Now I can just pencil in a few minutes every day to check my SocialDwarfs stream to see if there’s anything I need to respond to and then leave again without getting distracted.

Analytics

The stats section gives some very useful information, like your audience for each platform, the locations where most of your readers are from, your top 5 posts/tweets, your top hashtags, and the time of day when your messages performed the best.

You can choose which accounts you want to be included in the stats and choose whichever date range you’d like.

Research and Idea Generation

The research section allows you to search Google News, Facebook and YouTube for popular content on whatever topic you want to post about. You can also set up RSS feeds and alerts if there are specific websites or terms you want to keep your eye on, or just pick a category in the Trending tab to find trending posts on that topic.

This is great for keeping up to date on what's happening in your niche, or for getting ideas on topics to write about when you're suffering from writer's block.

And if you want to share an article you find here with your followers, then you can easily share it or schedule it for later with just a few clicks.

Plans and Pricing

SocialDwarfs has 2 plans: the Free Plan and the Pro Plan.

The free plan allows you unlimited social media accounts - a huge benefit over Hootsuite and Buffer's free plans, which only allow 3 and 5 accounts respectively.

The Pro plan costs $9 per month or $79 per year (which totals $6.58 per month). The Pro plan also allows you to manage unlimited social media accounts, and yet it costs less than the cheapest plans on both Hootsuite ($11.99/mo for 10 social media profiles) and Buffer ($20/mo for 10 social media profiles per platform).

Below is a complete feature list and comparison between the two plans.

Conclusion

SocialDwarfs is a fantastic social media management tool, and it's still in its early stages. I'm looking forward to what the future will bring.

I think the unlimited social media accounts alone makes it a valid alternative to the more established tools - but the ability to manage Google+, YouTube, and Instagram accounts would make it even better.

The lack of support for those platforms was my one disappointment with this tool, but I can live with updating them manually for a little while longer. This may or may not be a problem for you, depending on which platforms you use.

There are a few things I didn't mention in the review, like the downloadable training guides for each SocialDwarfs feature and each social media platform. SD is very easy to use, but the guides and the little help button on every page are there in case you ever get stuck or in case you're new to social media.

If you'd like to outsource your social media completely, there's also a "done for you" content feature by native English speakers who'll create the content for your Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts each month. If you're interested in this service you'll need to contact support for a quote, as the price depends on the number of networks needed.

The SocialDwarfs team said they plan to be holding webinars in the near future with social media guests, to help both the lite and pro members gain the most value and ROI from our social media campaigns.
